Grace at the Centre

Everything begins with the grace of God.

From our worship and preaching, to Baptism and Communion, to the way we welcome and care for people — we believe Christianity begins not with what we do for God, but with what God has first done for us in Jesus Christ.

We believe God meets people with mercy before merit, invitation before achievement, and love before performance. That shapes the kind of church we want to be: humble, welcoming, compassionate and deeply thankful.

Because we have received grace, we seek to extend grace to others.

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.”
— Ephesians 2:8

We Listen

Many people today feel unheard, overlooked or isolated.

We believe one of the most powerful things the church can offer is genuine attention: a place where people are listened to with care, dignity and compassion.

Listening shapes how we try to follow Jesus at Erskine Parish Church. It shapes how we do mission. It influences how we support our community, care for people, work with schools and partner with local organisations.

Mission begins not with assumptions, but with attention.

Our Listening Service is one practical expression of this wider commitment — but the deeper goal is to build a church culture that takes people seriously and walks alongside them well.

“Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak…”
— James 1:19

Rooted in Scripture

We believe the Bible is God’s Word and remains deeply relevant for life today. We come with an expectation God will speak to us through it.

Scripture shapes our worship, preaching, leadership and understanding of the world. We believe the Christian faith speaks not only to Sunday worship, but to everyday life: our work, relationships, communities, questions and struggles.

Rather than reshaping Christianity around the culture of the moment, we seek to be continually shaped by the truth and wisdom of God.

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
— Psalm 119:105

A Place of Welcome and Hope

We want our church to be a place where people encounter both the truth of Jesus Christ and the warmth of genuine Christian community.

Visitors often comment on the kindness and welcome they experience here, and we are deeply thankful for that. We believe hospitality matters to God, and that every person should be treated with dignity, patience and care.

In an anxious and fast-moving world, we also believe the church should offer something increasingly rare: peace, steadiness and sanctuary. Through worship, prayer, Scripture and community, we hope people find space to breathe, reflect, heal and encounter God.

We want our services to be places where people know what to expect, feel safe to participate at their own pace, and experience thoughtful care regardless of where they are in life or faith. At the centre of all this is Jesus Christ — our source of hope, grace and peace. Beyond this, we want our building to be a place that helps our local community flourish in so many ways beyond what happens on Sunday, whether facilitating health care, social and well-being
groups or activities for local young people.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
— Matthew 11:28

Faith in Action

We believe the good news of Jesus Christ should shape the whole of life.

Christian faith is not only something we believe privately — it changes how we live, serve and participate in the world around us. We want to be a church that blesses our local community by means of practical care, faithful presence and active service.

Whether through pastoral care, community partnerships, youth work, volunteering or everyday acts of kindness, we believe small acts of faithfulness matter.

“Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”
— 1 John 3:18

Integrity and Good Order

We believe faithfulness is expressed not only in what the church teaches, but also in how the church is organised, governed and cared for.

As part of the Presbyterian tradition, we value accountability, shared leadership and the importance of good order within the life of the church. We seek to act with integrity, wisdom and transparency in all areas of church life.

That includes maintaining strong safeguarding practices, taking health and safety seriously, stewarding our buildings and resources responsibly, and ensuring our decision-making and finances are handled openly and carefully.

We believe these things are not distractions from Christian mission, but part of loving our neighbour well and serving Christ faithfully.

“Everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.”
— 1 Corinthians 14:40
